History Lesson on NBC
Feb. 24th, 2006 02:59 pmAt the Olympics, the announcers were commenting on the intensity of the Finnland-Russia game, and one of the announcers asked, seriously, if there was any history between the countries. Neither announcer knew. Later, they got a history update from some staffer and were reading it on camera. They started with Russia taking Finnland from Sweeden in the early 19th century, then Finland gaining its freedom at the end of World War I. Then the line that really struck me (from memory, apologies if I botch the exact wording)
"Apparently, there was a war in 1939 . . ."
Apparently.
