I was watching the Colbert Report last night while sketching some notes for the linguistic paper on this blog and realized I am missing a small but important bit of psychological data. I'm running some experiments before I continue with the paper.
Peggy Noonan was the guest on the Colbert Report. She was the speech writer who came up with the "thousand points of light" phrase for Bush 41 and has been a big mover in the Republican party before and since. Stephen Colbert is a political comedian who pretends to be naive as part of his stage persona, but who has clearly done a lot of homework.
I absolutely adored the following exchange. Transcribed from memory, so don't pop I cork if I misremembered something.

S: So you took an unpaid leave of absence to work on the 2004 campaign.
P: Yes.
S: So could you list a few of the accomplishments of the past year the make you know it was all worth while?
